SNAS 1 (Singapore National Abseiling Standard)
Introduction to abseiling
What is SNAS 1?
SNAS 1 is the entry-level certification within the Singapore Abseiling Climbing Standard. It serves as a fundamental course designed to equip participants with the basic skills and knowledge necessary for abseiling. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including safety measures, equipment usage, and basic abseiling techniques.
Should I get a SNAS 1 certificate?
Frequently, I am asked whether acquiring a certificate for abseiling is necessary. The answer, in a straightforward sense, is NO. Realistically, when you're out on a mountain, nobody is going to demand your SNAS 1 certificate before allowing you to abseil. This may seem ironic, so why, then, do I offer these courses? The truth is, while the certificate itself may not be mandatory, learning from the right instructors is crucial for your safety. The detailed SNAS 1 syllabus (outlined below) delves into the subject matter, providing critical knowledge. I view the certificate as a bonus, showcasing that you have met the minimum standards.

That being said, the certificate becomes essential in two specific scenarios. Firstly, if you aspire to progress to the next level, such as SNAS 2 and SNAS 3, you will be required to present your SNAS 1 certificate. Secondly, if you are eyeing a career in the outdoor scene, certificates of personal proficiency, including SNAS 1, carry significant weight.
Why train with me?
If you have made up your mind to get trained, there are many options out there. Why sign up with me? When you learn new skills, not only do you want to learn from somebody who has mastered those skills, but also from somebody who is current, and good at teaching.

I have been trained in various countries such as Singapore(duh!), Australia, Indian Himalayas, Scotland, England, and the French Alps. You can find out more here. I will be able to provide you with multiple perspectives that will help you in your learning journey.

I follow a social constructivist theory of learning and apply an inquiry-based approach as my pedagogy. This is a mouthful but in essence, it means that the way that I design the sessions is very deliberate. Often, you only get back to the activity after a few months following your training. My aim is that you understand the fundamentals such that you feel confident to carry on even after a few months break. Don't just take my words for it, you can see what previous participants said below.
